Sing your own 'Xmas

To my beloved students….

Christmas is close  but we know that  everybody feels their own Christmas!
What I’d like you to do this year is to choose a Christmas song which represents “your own Chistmas”!
I mean….a song which reflects your feelings, your state of mind, your soul, your life…..YOU!!!!!!
You will text me your choice before the last school day  (22nd of December)

During Christmas holiday you will text me information about:
  •   The singer/the group
  •   The historical period in which it was written
  •   The message
  •   Why it represents you

The best 3 will be published here and will get “a prize”!
So……ready….set…..GO!!!!!

DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS?
This song was written by a group: Band Aid. It has it's origin in London, it's a charity supergroup featuring mainly British and Irish musicians. It was founded in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for anti-famine efforts in Ethiopia by releasing this song: Do They Know It's Christmas?
As we said, the group was founded in 1984 and the song was written in that year. During March of this year we remember the beginning of the miners' strike and events like Britain severing diplomatic relations with Libya and thirty Libyan diplomats leaving Britain (in April). All 1984 has been coloured in red by the blood of the striking miners, like during May when they fought with police. And than in September the High Court rules that the miners' strike is unlawful. Another event is that Mikhail Gorbachev of the Soviet Union visited Britain in December.
This song brings an important message: we usually have fun on Christmas, but we should remember that there are too many people who don't know what it is because they are in a really tragic situation. Our world is full of citizens that struggle every day just to live, dealing with wars and hunger. So this song wants to tell us that we can do something to let them know that life can be better or just that it's Christmas here!
This song represents me and my point of view on Christmas because I can't realize that we are totally ignoring our world's problems. Like it says “there's a world outside the window, and it's a world of dread and fear”. I'm deeply bounded with the lyrics of the song because it helped me so much taking one of the most difficult decisions ever. I've always wanted to help in any possible way the people around the world, than I've found out what solidal travels are and I knew I had to do it. I want to go to South Africa and teach young children who don't have their parents anymore, but it's a hard decision to take and this song made me choose. I'll leave when I'll turn 18 because my parents want it that way, but I only have to thank a few people and this one song because it had a very strong effect on my life.

CHRISTMAS SONG
FA LA LA – Justin Bieber feat Boyz II Men

I love Christmas, it's my favourite holiday. You know, it's winter and it is so cold, and you can stay at home with a cup of hot chocolate and marshmallows and a soft blanket on you . Furthermore it is the only period in the year when I can stay with my grandparents, and this is really important for me!
But I think that Christmas means not only presents, sweets, snow, hot chocolate, and whatever. Christmas for me means love, love for your family but especially for your partner.. I mean, the nights at the cinema or simply in the sofa watching a film or a tv program together under a soft blanket. I have this idea of Christmas!
For that reason I choose a song that talks about my idea of Christmas and, of course, that represents me.. This song is “Fa La La” from my favourite singer Justin Bieber.
Justin Bieber is a young boy borned in Canada on the 1st March of 1994. He started his career in 2009 when he was only 15 years old and he immediately became a world star. He did a lot of albums and three world tour, he won a lot of awards and he partecipated in some tv series, films, tv program and whatever. But since the beginning he has been hated and criticized without reason, but he has never gave up. Since 2012 he is my favourite singer, I love all his songs and I'm obsessed with his music..his voice his my drug.
Between all his albums, there is one that I'm obsessed with, and this is “Under the mistletoe” the Christmas album. In this album he did 15 songs and he collaborated with a lot of amazing singers, like Usher and Mariah Carey, and he won some awards. I really like all the songs but one of them, for the words and the sound, is my favourite. This song is featured Boyz II Men and they are an American R&B vocal group, best known for emotional ballads and “a cappella” harmonies, and they are Michael McCary, Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman. They did all together this song on 23th November 2011 with the video in black and white too.
There is an historical song that is called “Fa la la la la” but Justin takes only the titol of the song because his is totally different. The historical song is a typical christmas song and exist in all the languages..people sing this song in all the world every Christmas.
The Justin's song is really romantic. There is a boy that does a love declaration to a girl and he says that on Christmas night she can make a wish because he will be there with her. He hears melodies when her heart beats, and he repets for all the time that she is so beautiful.
I don't know but I really enjoy this song, maybe for the words or the sound, but it's my Christmas. I'm sure you will ask you, this song is so stupid and trivial so why represent you? It's easy, I love simplicity and I like to be courted. This song represent what I like and what I dream, a cute guy that makesme a surprise on Christmas day and an amazing end of the year with him.. Christmas for me is this song, and this song is me! FRANCESCA ANTONELLI IIIG

TOO MUCH TO ASK - Arctic Monkeys (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d09GTcacnUY)

Well, it's not a Christmas song, but I have listened it every day so I associate it to this period.
This song was written by Arctic Monkeys that is absolutely my favourite indie-rock band.
It was founded in 2002 in Sheffield, but how? On 2002, at Christmas, Alex Turner (the singer) and his friend James Cook (the guitarist) received both an electric guitar. So they learned together how to play it and they founded the band.
As you can see, all of the band's success comes from Christmas, because if they didn't receive the guitars they wouldn't become famous as they are. In fact sometimes Christmas is the period where you can learn and discover new things, for example, I have started play the piano.
Also, Christmas is the period where you can stay with your family, your friends and people you love, without any distractions. Although I grew up and I don't feel Christmas as when I was a child, I love this period because there is Christmas Holiday and I can relax.
But what I really enjoy is seeing my little brother waiting Santa Claus. It reminds me when I was a child and I was so excited to open my presents on 25th.
In addition to my little brother, what makes me feel Christmas is that song, even if it hasn't a Christmas message or something else. I love the sound and it reminds me what I have done in these 2 weeks.

SOMEONE- By Tabb&Sound'n'Grace (https://youtu.be/uqvb0lUZ9MI)

Tabb&Sound'n'Grace is a polish choir that does gospel, R&B and funk music. The choir was founded in Warsaw in 2005, but they made their first album in june 2015. I don't know much about them and I didn't know them since I heard this song. The song is called "Someone" and it was written in September 2015 and it's the soundtrack of a polish Christmas movie. The song has two versions: the first version is in english and the second one is in polish (it's called "Na Pewno").The song talks about having hope in life, even if you're falling down or if you're feeling bad, you have to try to forget everything and think about the little things that matter in life, like having someone special by your side. This song reminds me of when i was in Warsaw one year ago, at Christmas, when I saw the movie of the song, when it was snowing outside and the atmosphere was magical, but most of all these things make me think of how much I miss Poland, how much i miss my lovely grandmother and how much i would like to spend more time with her, especially in the Christmas period. In fact this song makes me sad and it's really important for me, it's a part of me now.

Miss you most (at Christmas time)- Mariah Carey

The singer of this wonderful song is the famous Mariah Carey. It's one of the most popular tracks in her album "Merry Christmas". This is her first Christmas album and it goes back to 1994. She wrote by herself all the original tracks cooperating just with Walter Afanasieff. The album has certified five-times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipment of five million copies in the United States. She suceeded in combining traditional Christian hymns with new songs. I think Mariah Carey is one of the most talented singers in the world. She was born the 27th of March 1970 in Huntington and started to sing at the age of four. At age 18 she signed with Columbia records and made her first album that contains famous tracks like "Vision of Love" and "I Don't Wanna Cry".Her second album was released in 1992 and its name's "Emotions". In the same year she appeared for the first time in her life on MTV, in a program called "Unplugged". Her next albums were "Music Box", "Merry Christmas" that I've talked about, "Daydream" and "Butterfly" in 1997. With 2008’s "Touch My Body" (from her album "E=MC²"), Carey passed Elvis Presley to become second only to the Beatles for the most number one hit singles in the United States.
I've chosen this song because when I listen to her words I really understand what she wanted to convey to us. I close my eyes and I really feel what she sings in my veins, in my brain, in my heart. The message could be reassumed in these few verses:
Everybody's laughing
The world is celebrating
And everyone's so happy
Except for me tonight
Because I miss you
Most at Christmas time
Some evenings I put my headphones in the ears and I listen to this song many and many times. It has a healing effect on me and I am aware that most peolpe can't understand me, but away in the distance someone can.

Hi Mrs. Giaimo this is Ludovica Caldarola from 3G. First of all I hope you’re fine and you had lovely holiday.
I’ve chosen a song which in my opinion represents exactly what’s the most important message of Christmas: ‘‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’’ by Band Aid.
This song was written in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure and suddenly recorded by a famous group called Band Aid, that was formed of very famous artists of that time. Band Aid is a charity group founded in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for anti-famine efforts in Ethiopia by releasing the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" for the Christmas market that year. The name of the band was chosen like a funny word-play referred to a famous brand of sticking plaster and because the musicians were involved in an endeavour of first aid.
The hit single, "Do They Know It’s Christmas?", was highly successful worldwide as two million copies were sold around the globe, raising more than $24,000,000 (USD).
The main message in my opinion is sharing Christmas feeling also with people who do not have sufficient livelihoods, beyond the religious significance of the Christmas, so that these people would be relieved by their daily suffering. The title of the song already in very significant in itself, telling us that for poor people Christmas time means nothing, as there is no difference between Christmas and a normal day of the year.
To me this successful project represents an important step in the effort of spreading all over the world the awareness that something must be done for less fortunate people, because this would increase significantly the welfare of the entire globe. As a matter of fact hunger and poor life conditions are at the origin of national and international conflicts, adding suffering to suffering. Still a lot must be done in that direction, but that was a very good start!
